Esperanza: Project Hope
In November 2007,
Ashland University SIFE launched Project Hope,
an international microfinance and education
program designed to empower the working poor
through self-employment. Our goal is to provide
them with the education and capital necessary to
start or expand their own small business.
Working with Esperanza, a microfinance
organization based in the Dominican Republic,
AUSIFE students traveled to rural communities
served by Esperanza and met with entrepreneurs
who have benefitted from microfinance loans. Our
mission was to meet with Esperanza micro loan
recipients and capture their stories on film.
Using this footage, we then set out to create a
promotional video which explains the
microfinance process and shows firsthand how
microfinance has changed their lives.
AUSIFE is using this promotional video, along
with photographs taken during our trip, to
generate awareness about microfinance. As part
of our campaign, we recently established the
AUSIFE International Microfinance Fund and are
currently raising money which is used to provide
loans to entrepreneurs around the world. Working
with Kiva International, the AUSIFE
International Microfinance Fund is now providing
hope to impoverished women in five countries on
four different continents.
