Morality vs. Legality

Ethical business practice is an important area of academia that does not often get taught in the classroom.  AUSIFE saw this as an opportunity to help students learn what it means to be ethical in business situations as well as in life through an open dialogue. Our goal is to further the future business community by providing ethical workers that will make moral decisions throughout their business careers.

Although the classroom teaches Ashland University students what will occur in the real world, many classroom settings do not specifically focus on the specific situations that students will run into in their careers.  SIFE decided to invite local business professionals in to answer some of the questions that the students had.  We focused on this need because many students felt more comfortable in talking in an open format outside of the classroom than in a classroom setting.

In the open discussion of Morality versus Legality, four business professionals were briefed on questions on specific situations that would challenge a worker’s morals in order to give them time think of personal situations and answers the questions.  The session began with the prepared questions being asked, followed by an open discussion between the attending students and professionals.  The Morality versus Legality discussion allowed students to openly ask questions on what to do in specific situations and the business professionals would respond with their advice.  One question that was asked was “What should you do if your manager is married and is having an affair with a coworker?”   This was a practical way for students to look at a situation that they could possibly handle in their career and determine what would be the ethical and legal response to the situation.  Many students were very interested in the topic and the discussion lasted even longer than scheduled!

The project fit the needs of AU’s business students because it allowed them to develop personally and professionally by exploring the situations that will test their characters.  It allowed them to grow through the open environment where students felt comfortable in asking questions that tested their ethics.
